Insurer Amlin back in profit in first half

Insurance group Amlin (LON:AML) has moved back into the black in the first half after taking a massive hit a year earlier due to a string of natural disasters along the Pacific Rim, including the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

For the six months to the end of June 2012, Amlin made a pretax profit of £184.5 million, compared with a loss of £192.3 million in the previous first half.

Gross written premiums were up up 19.8 percent year-on-year at £1.815 billion.

Analysts had been expecting a sharp improvement, but the pretax results came in above consensus of around £165 million.

At 10.20 am, Amlin shares were trading at 391.5 pence, up 2.7 percent.

The company will pay an interim dividend of 7.5 pence a year, up 4.2 percent.
