The UK government will publish a White Paper on gambling reform in the coming weeks amid claims current legislation is inadequate to deal with the boom in online gaming.
Under the mooted new measures, the government is considering introducing a maximum stake in online casinos of between £2 and £5, a ban on free bets and prohibiting VIP packages for those who incur heavy losses.
Affordability checks are also being considered.
Gaming companies will also have to remove online features which increase the level of risk for customers.
The Gambling Commission is set to be granted new powers along with extra funding from increased fees paid by the industry.
According to the Independent, proposals banning gambling companies from shirt sponsorship are set to be rejected in favour of a voluntary agreement with Premier League clubs.
“We are undertaking the most comprehensive review of gambling laws in 15 years to ensure they are fit for the digital age,” a spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport.
Recent figures released by the commission showed online gambling was at its highest ever rate in the UK, with one in four Britons making online bets.
