Ford to double production of electric F-150 Lightning pickup

The carmaker had to stop taking pre-orders for the vehicle last month after it received nearly 200,000 reservations

Ford Motor Company plans to almost double production of its new electric F-150 pickup to 150,000 vehicles per year by mid-2023.

This is the second time the US carmaker has revealed plans to double output of the truck, which is due be launched this spring. Annual production had initially been set at around 40,000 units.

Ford had to stop taking pre-orders for the vehicle last month after it received nearly 200,000 reservations.

“The reception of this vehicle has been absolutely incredible,” Kumar Galhotra, Ford president of the Americas & international markets, said on Tuesday on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

Meanwhile, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) is scheduled to reveal an electric version of its Chevrolet Silverado on Wednesday. The pickup, which is expected to go on sale in 2023, is likely to compete more directly with Ford’s F-150 Lightning than GM’s Hummer EV.
