Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LSE:LLOY), BP PLC (LSE:BP.) and Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (LSE:RR.) were among the most popular shares for UK private investors to buy in the past month, according to data from three top investment and trading platforms.
US stocks have not been as widely bought as in the first half of the year, though the likes of AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) (NYSE:AMC), Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) were added to many an ISA portfolio.
Among investment trusts and funds, tech-tilted Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC (LSE:SMT) stands undefeated in terms of private investor popularity.

Lloyds, Rolls-Royce, British Airways owner International Consolidated Airlines Group (LSE:IAG), EasyJet and Rio Tinto have been universally popular among retail investors in the past month.
Across a couple of the major investment platforms, AIM companies were prominent, notably Russia-focused Eurasia Mining PLC (AIM:EUA) top of the list at Interactive Investor.
Elsewhere, Argo Blockchain PLC (LSE:ARB, OTCQX:ARBKF, NASDAQ:ARBK, ETR:0XP) and ITM Power PLC (AIM:ITM) remained on the leaderboards after featuring in the first half too.
Along with newcomer Darktrace PLC (LSE:DARK), the artificial intelligence-powered cybersecurity group, this showed the thirst from UK investors for tech stocks, which was also apparent in most of the US names that were added to portfolios in the past month.
Commission-free broker Freetrade's most popular client purchases were all from the NYSE and Nasdaq, with memestock names AMC Entertainment and GameStop Corp (NYSE:GME) still attracting new investors despite the media attention to the trends dipping.
Electric vehicle rivals Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Lucid Group Inc (NASDAQ:LCID) and Nasdaq titans Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc were also top picks.
Across the whole of the third quarter, data from AJ Bell shows Lloyds and BP were the most popular pair, followed by GlaxoSmithKline PLC (LSE:GSK), IAG, Rolls and Vodafone, while Unilever PLC (LSE:ULVR) and Shell were in ninth and 10th place for the quarter.
At Hargreaves Landsdown, the Q3 favourites (in alphabetical order) were AMC, Aviva, easyJet, Gamestop, IAG, L&G, Lloyd, Rio and Rolls.
“Share investors have largely focused on cyclical areas of the market, which also offer attractive dividends too," said Laith Khalaf, head of investment analysis at AJ Bell.
"Dividend yield is often a key consideration for DIY investors, some of whom will be drawing an income from their SIPPs and ISAs. Unilever also proved popular despite a year in which the stock market more broadly has turned against its former darling. DIY investors have clearly seen the sell off as an opportunity to buy into what they see as a robust growth business at a reasonable price.”

During September, Scottish Mortgage remained the most popular on AJ Bell, but City Of London, Monks Investment Trust and Blackrock World Mining Trust all climbed up the table to third, fourth and fifth, while Witan Investment Trust and Bankers Investment Trust both made it onto the table.
Says Khalaf: “The behemoths Fundsmith Equity and Scottish Mortgage still sit atop the table, despite recently not delivering the blockbuster outperformance investors have become accustomed to. Passive funds and ETFs also feature heavily in the most purchased funds of the summer, perhaps reflecting an uncertain outlook which requires high levels of diversification. Two sustainable funds make it into the top ten, and at an industry level, there are still large ongoing inflows into ESG funds. With COP 26 about to kick off in Glasgow, it looks likely to be another record-breaking year for ethical fund sales."
