The first six months of 2021 have been "transformational", 4D Pharma PLC, the developer of live biotherapeutic drugs that interact with the human microbiome said as it posted interim results.
The key milestone from a capital markets perspective, was the company’s Nasdaq listing in March via special acquisition vehicle, which now provides a significantly larger investor base.
The loss for the period before fair value accounting adjustments was £12.7mln, with almost £10mln invested in research and development.
More importantly, it exited the six months to June 30 with £20.7mln of cash and equivalents. After the period-end, it agreed a senior secured debt facility of £22mln (US$30mln).
Operationally, it was a busy start to 2021. 4d had updates on Blautix, its putative treatment for irritable bowel syndrome; it began an asthma trial and kicked off a second programme to assess MRx0518 in combination with a checkpoint inhibitor drug.
There were also updates on other MRx0518 clinical programmes, and the announcement of a collaboration with Parkinson's UK.
Since the end of the first half, 4D has published pre-clinical research on its second-generation immuno-oncology drug, LBP MRx1299, assessing its potential to improve the activity of CAR-T therapies. All the announcements can be found here.
“The first half of 2021 has been a significant period for 4D pharma,” the company said.
“Our dual listing on Nasdaq raised our international profile and, using this as a platform along with new funds at our disposal, we look ahead to a period rich in clinical catalysts across our pipeline of live biotherapeutic products taking the microbiome beyond the gut, including clinical readouts and the commencement of new studies across multiple programs.
“Highs and lows in the broader microbiome space have created mixed feelings towards microbiome therapeutic approaches - we are confident 4D pharma's differentiated, mechanism-driven approach is poised to deliver.”
