Great Western Mining Corp PLC (AIM:GWMO) said it discovered gold at shallow depths in multiple holes in its first exploration drilling at the Rock House project in Nevada, US.
Final assay results from six drill holes at the Southern Alteration Zone (SAZ) prospect established the potential for gold at shallow depths. The best intercepts were: 1.52 metres at 8.02 grammes a tonne (g/t) gold from a depth of 97.53 metres, and 1.52 metres at 2.29 g/t gold from 28.95 metres.
Deeper drilling beneath the two holes where the best results were from will aim to establish whether the zones contain significant dip extents, while further drilling is also needed to uncover further extensions along strike to the west, the company said.
"The Southern Alteration Zone results represent a major breakthrough for the company in virgin territory, which we will be following up as soon as possible,” said chairman Brian Hall. “The SAZ is only one of three prospects at Rock House and the other two have yet to be drilled.”
"We are also extremely encouraged by our progress at Olympic Gold,” he said.
Final assay results have been received for four holes drilled at the Olympic Gold project, also in Nevada, around the abandoned OMCO mine which produced high-grade gold until the 1940s.
Two of the holes indicated the continuation of the OMCO mine vein to east of a north-south fault. The other two holes drilled to west of the fault and close to the abandoned mine delivered reportable grades of gold and Great Western plans to drill a follow-up hole between them.
“Olympic has been explored by several companies since the highly productive OMCO gold vein was abandoned nearly 80 years ago, but in little over a year our drilling campaign has achieved much more than those of our predecessors,” said Hall.
“We now have a greatly improved understanding of the geological setting and structures involved in the OMCO mineralisation and we will use this additional information to zero in on what we believe to be a significant gold exploration opportunity.”
