Pret a Manger to open cafes in Tesco sites to cope with working from home aftermath

The cafe chain is already selling frozen croissants and granola at Tesco supermarkets

Pret a Manger will trial new cafes at Tesco PLC (LON:TSCO) sites to cope with the drop in demand caused by the transition to homeworking.

It will first open four branches, beginning with the grocer’s superstore in Kensington, London, and roll out more if successful.

The pair are extending their partnership, after Pret a Manger launched frozen croissants and granola at the supermarket, the BBC reported.

Many of the sandwich chain’s concessions are located in city centres and rely on commuters and office workers.

"As the UK emerges from lockdown, this partnership with Tesco is one way in which we're transforming our business model," said chief executive Pano Christou.

It ended up cutting nearly 2,900 jobs last summer amid dire trading, closing 74 UK outlets and 22 in the US.

It then announced a £20-a-week in-shop coffee subscription service to try hold onto its customers.

With the first month coming for free, this offers caffeine addicts up to five barista-prepared drinks per day — though you have to wait at least half an hour between each one.

Pret, whose subscribers can order their flat white, cappuccino or long black by email, phone or digital wallet, said the service is part of a “newly developed digital ecosystem will enable Pret to develop insight and data-led products and services many of which are already on trial across London”.
