Infinity Lithium Corporation Ltd - Infinity Lithium Corporation appoints lithium expert to technical advisory committee as Euopean EV support grows
The flagship project is well-placed amidst increasing political and financial support for lithium extraction and conversion projects

Infinity Lithium Corporation Ltd (ASX:INF) has appointed highly credentialed lithium processing expert David Maree to the Technical Advisory Committee as the company progresses its strategy of serving Europe's aims for a cleaner and greener future through its San José project in Spain.

Maree is a process development scientist with significant experience in hard rock lithium projects, including with Tianqi Lithium Corp (SHE:002466) in the evaluation, piloting and implementation of plant innovations, managing feasibility study pilot tests and front-end engineering.

He was also the principal research scientist with Talison Lithium (Greenbushes) from 2011–2015 and was responsible for the development of hydrometallurgical flowsheets for the production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide.

“Attracting leading experts”

The appointment of Maree and announcement of the Technical Advisory Committee follows the appointment of executive director and chief technical officer Jon Starink to lead the company’s technical development program.

Infinity managing director and CEO Ryan Parkin said: “We welcome David to Infinity’s technical team and we are delighted that we continue to attract leading experts on a global stage to the project.

“Infinity will continue to bolster our technical expertise following on from the development of the Technical Advisory Committee under the leadership of Jon Starink.

“We are excited to further build our internal expertise as we progress the San José feasibility study against a backdrop of increasing political and financial support for lithium extraction and conversion projects."

European lithium-ion battery value chain

The San José Project is focused on the production of battery-grade lithium chemicals from a mica feedstock that represents the EU’s second-largest JORC-compliant hard rock lithium deposit and provides an essential component in the EU’s development of a vertically integrated lithium-ion battery supply chain.

Notably, in an announcement last week, the EU commented that it could be self-sufficient in electric vehicle batteries by 2025, with European Commission vice president Maroš Šefčovič noting the EU's 750 billion euro coronavirus recovery fund was a ‘ready-made tool’ to support projects in the lithium-ion battery value chain.

The launch of the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA) in September 2020 by Šefčovič has reinforced the EU’s major focus to boost domestic suppliers of raw materials and lithium chemicals required to make cells.

This bodes well for the project as the availability of critical raw materials and the production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide in the EU is essential to ensure the long-term production of lithium-ion batteries for electric mobility and the transition to electric vehicles.
