Heathrow boss says social distancing measures could cause kilometre-long queues in airports

John Holland-Kaye urged the government to implement new measures by the end of the month to allow summer flights to resume

Heathrow’s chief executive warned that airports do not have enough space to allow travellers to queue respecting social distancing measures.

"Forget social distancing, it won't work in aviation or any other form of public transport, and the problem is not the plane, it is the lack of space in the airport," John Holland-Kaye wrote in the Daily Telegraph on Monday.

"Just one jumbo jet would require a queue a kilometre long."

Holland-Kaye said governments should find alternative solutions, such as mandatory checks and high levels of hygiene, and urged Prime Minister Boris Johnson to introduce new standards by the end of the month to allow summer flights to resume.

April passengers in Heathrow were down around 97% due to travel restrictions to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
