Active Energy buoyed by interest in SuperFuel technology

Active Energy Group PLC (LON:AEG) struck a resolute tone as it said that the commerciality of its Polish ‘SuperFuel’ venture won’t be dented by the lack of European Union funding.

The London-listed biomass specialist in partnership with its Polish partner, Cobant, unsuccessfully applied in August 2018 for grant funding to support the further development of its SuperFuel technology – which blends AEG’s CoalSwitch product with waste from coal slurry dumps in Poland.

It followed a prior endorsement, in June 2018, from a Polish government lab which via burn testing confirmed that SuperFuel had a similar calorific value to coal with significantly lower sulphur content and low ash and SOx and NOx emissions.

Consequently, the product was certified to carry the Polish Government's Ecological Safety Symbol, allowing the solid fuel to be sold without restriction in Poland.

That enabled the start of commercial production of SuperFuel for coal-fired power stations across Poland, as well as use in municipal heating and private household heating systems.

“AEG and Cobant are together now re-assessing the application and are considering resubmitting the application to the EU,” AEG said in the statement.

It added: “AEG's Directors believe the certification that SuperFuel received last summer from the Polish Government, that enabled its commercialisation, is unimpacted by the EU's decision regarding the grant.

“The SuperFuel product has generated interest from potential commercial partners and although no assurances can be given at this stage that formal agreements will be reached, AEG and Cobant remain engaged in discussions with several potential offtake partners.”
