Berkeley Energia Ltd. (LON:BKY) has noted recent media reports regarding various legal challenges to recently announced appointments to the board of the country’s Nuclear Safety Council.

In a brief statement, the dual London and Spain listed uranium mine developer said it will advise shareholders of the decision by Spain’s Supreme Court on the legality of these appointments as soon as it is received.

In the meantime, the group added, it continues to progress the approvals for the Salamanca mine and will advise shareholders as soon as any decision is made by the Nuclear Safety Council.

Reuters reported last week that Berkeley Energia had appealed to Spain’s Supreme Court against the nomination of new members to the country’s nuclear safety council, which is due to assess the group’s uranium mine project near Salamanca.

The newswire said that in a document released on Thursday, the court had rejected a request from Berkeley to urgently suspend a government decree last week which named four new members to the Nuclear Safety Council’s five-strong board, which rules on the safety of nuclear and radioactive facilities.

The proposed new members include an ecological activist, who has campaigned against Berkeley’s mine project, Reuters added.

The court gave the Spanish government 10 days to offer its side of the story before deciding how to proceed, it said.
