Tesco's UK and Ireland boss steps down after cancer diagnosis, to be replaced by chief product officer

Tesco PLC (LON:TSCO) has announced that Charles Wilson, boss of its UK and Ireland business will step down after a cancer diagnosis  and will be replaced by group chief product officer, Jason Tarry.

Britain's biggest retailer said Wilson, the former CEO of wholesaler Booker which Tesco acquired in a deal that only completed in March, will focus on leading the Booker business and continue to report to Tesco’s CEO Dave Lewis.

The FTSE 100-listed firm added that the changes came after Wilson was diagnosed with throat cancer in April.

Tesco said that Wilson, who will step down from the PLC Board, but remain on the firm’s Executive Committee. has been responding well to radiotherapy and that the signs were that the treatment has been successful.

It added that Andrew Yaxley, currently CEO Ireland, will be promoted to group chief product officer to replace Tarry and will join the Tesco Executive Committee.

The group said all changes to responsibilities will be effective from July 16.
