Rimfire Pacific Mining (ASX: RIM) has begun rotary air blast drilling to south of known gold mineralisation at Trench 31 within the Sorpresa project area in New South Wales.

The program, which will run for about two weeks, is aiming to penetrate the alluvium cover in this location and test the underlying bedrock potential for gold.

Drilling will be at shallow depths of around 6 to 12 metres and comprise around 45 holes.

This is the first extensive prospecting for gold under the alluvium cover sequence.

Much of the highly prospective Sorpresa Project, yet to be explored, is hidden under shallow alluvium.

The rotary air blast drilling will help lay the foundation for additional deeper reverse circulation drilling at a later stage.

The new drill program is running in parallel to the current diamond drilling program of around 1,300 metres across five holes and the reverse circulation percussion drilling program of around 2,500 metres across 25 holes.

Diamond drilling

The first hole has finished at the Trench 31 location and was drilled to 152 metres depth as planned.

Based on preliminary core inspection in the field, the hole has intersected mineralisation as expected.

Much of the core length is mineralised, but this is not a true width as drilling is close to down dip.

Intervals for assay await a more detailed examination of the core for structure, geology and metallurgy perspectives.

This is the first core seen of the Sorpresa mineralisation.

RC percussion drilling

Nine reverse circulation holes, with depths of 85 to 120 metres in step out delineation drilling have been completed at Trench 31.

Each hole appears mineralised, indicating probable new gold positions.

Samples await processing, despatch and laboratory assay.

Rimfire had cash reserves of around $2.5 million in cash at the end of December 2012.
