Altona Mining (ASX:AOH) has returned numerous outstanding copper intersections from the upper part of the Wombat zone at its Kylylahti Mine in Finland, such as: 29.0 metres at 4.7% copper; and 37.6 metres at 3.2% copper.
Copper mineralisation at The Wombat zone has been found to be thicker and higher grade than was anticipated by the existing resource model.
As the mine develops deeper, underground drilling is undertaken to accurately define the location of development and to provide information to aid stope design. All intercepts adjacent to mine development and will be included in the mine plan for 2014 and 2015.
The annual production rate at Kylylahti averages 8000 tonnes of copper, 8400 ounces of gold and 1600 tonnes of zinc, with a study to expand production up to 12000 tonnes of copper underway, utilising the recently refurbished Luikonlahti mill.
Regional resources include 9 million tonnes in 2 closed mines and 4 unmined resources within 30 kilometres of the Luikonlahti mill.
June quarter production of copper in concentrates 1809 tonnes, with gold at 1822 ounces. C1 cash cost came in at US$2.23 per pound of payable copper.
This is a notable development for Altona as the new, thicker, higher grade copper zones have the potential to substantially enhance mine economics for Kylylahti.
