Debenhams poaches new chief executive from Amazon

Department store group says Sergio Bucher will take up the role in October

Department store chain Debenhams PLC (LON:DEB) has poached a new chief executive from Amazon.com, Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN).

Debenhams has appointed Sergio Bucher to replace Michael Sharp, who stands down next month.

Bucher will join the group in October from the online retail giant, where he has been vice-president of Amazon Fashion Europe since 2013.

Debenhams said he led "Amazon Fashion's growth to become one of the largest fashion retailers in Europe".

Previously he worked as a general manager of retail and e-commerce worldwide at sports goods group Puma.

Before that he was at rival sports goods maker Nike and Zara owner Inditex, where he led the start-up of lingerie retail brand Oysho.

Debenhams has been battling to overcome online competition by reducing promotions and making better use of store space.

Chairman Ian Cheshire said: "Following a rigorous recruitment process with some exceptional quality candidates, Sergio's wealth of e-commerce expertise, international experience and clear leadership qualities stood out.

"I am confident we have the best possible person."

Bucher said: "I am excited to be joining Debenhams, with its strong UK heritage, a growing international presence and a track record of supporting and developing brands and designers."

Shares rose 1.6% to 74.9p in early London trading.
