EMC Gold Corp (ASX:EM3, FRA:JL2) has appointed Spain-based mining executive Agne Ahlenius as chief executive officer and executive director, reinforcing the company’s strategic focus on advancing the Salave Gold Project in northern Spain.
Ahlenius will begin in the role on July 6, 2026, bringing more than 35 years of experience across mine development, operations, project delivery and stakeholder engagement in Europe and the Americas. His appointment comes as EMC positions itself as a Spain-focused gold development company, with Salave as its flagship asset.
Spain-based leadership
Ahlenius’ Spanish base, fluency in the language and track record across Spanish mining operations made him well aligned with EMC’s next stage of growth.
He has held senior executive roles at several Spanish mining operations and projects, including Saloro, Kinbauri España, MATSA and Tungsten San Juan, and has extensive experience working with Spanish government authorities, regulators, local communities and industry stakeholders.
As part of the leadership transition, Alberto Lavandeira has been appointed non-executive chairman, while Dominic Roberts will move from executive chairman to non-executive director.
Salave development focus
The board said the changes create an appropriate governance framework for EMC’s next phase, with executive leadership based in Spain and focused on permitting, stakeholder engagement and development activities at Salave.
Non-executive chairman Alberto Lavandeira said Ahlenius’ operational expertise and Spanish mining credentials made him an ideal leader as EMC advances the project.
“Salave is recognised as one of Europe’s most significant undeveloped gold projects and represents a compelling opportunity for both EMC Gold and the Asturias region,” Ahlenius said.
