Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and current CEO of Block Inc (NYSE:SQ), has unveiled a beta version of Bitchat, a decentralized messaging app that works without internet using Bluetooth mesh networks.
Dorsey outlined the app’s features in a post on the social media platform X on Sunday evening.
The app enables peer-to-peer encrypted communication without phone numbers, emails, or central servers.
Messages are end-to-end encrypted, ephemeral, and routed through nearby devices for delivery.
my weekend project to learn about bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store and forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things.

Users identify themselves with self-chosen handles, and the app avoids storing personal data. They can join or create chatrooms, with messages stored temporarily on devices if recipients are offline.
Bitchat is designed for use in offline, censored, or high-risk environments like protests or disaster zones.
The app is currently available via TestFlight for iOS and macOS, with open-source code and future plans to add Wi-Fi support.
