The US Securities and Exchange Commission is under pressure from President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to roll back regulations on SPACs and private investment funds, Reuters has reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
DOGE staff have begun meeting with SEC teams to consider reversing rules introduced under President Biden.
These include requirements for SPACs, blank-cheque firms used to take companies public, and stricter reporting for private fund managers.
The involvement of a White House office in what has traditionally been an independent regulator’s remit has raised eyebrows among SEC insiders and policy experts.
Critics, including former officials, warned that DOGE’s role could compromise the agency’s neutrality.
A White House spokesperson defended the collaboration, saying the aim was to streamline regulation without undermining investor protection.
The SEC confirmed it is working with DOGE on cost efficiencies, though did not comment on specific policy changes.
