UK start-up demonstrates five minute EV battery charger

Nyobolt, a British battery company, said it has developed an electric car battery that can be charged in just five minutes, addressing a major concern for EV drivers.

The Cambridge-based firm unveiled a prototype vehicle with a 155-mile range, showcasing this breakthrough technology.

This rapid charging capability could match the convenience of filling up a petrol car, teh company claims.

Nyobolt said talks are underway with eight carmakers to integrate this battery technology initially into high-performance vehicles and then mass-manufactured vehicles.

At a demonstration, a prototype was charged to 80% in less than five minutes, significantly faster than even the current fastest-charging EVs.

Nyobolt’s technology uses low-impedence carbon and metal oxide materials in the anode, significantly reducing the fire risk with the company claiming they keep their charge for hundreds of thousands of miles.

On a Lotus Exige chassis retrofitted with a Nyobolt battery, achieving a charge from 1.7% to 80% in just over five minutes.

Under cooler conditions, the battery can charge from 0% to 100% in around six minutes.

The company plans to produce 1,000 batteries next year, targeting the ultra-premium market before scaling up for mass production in family cars within four years.

Shane Davies, Nyobolt’s director of vehicle battery systems, said: “Nyobolt is removing the obstacle of slow and inconvenient charging, making electrification appealing and accessible to those who don’t have the time for lengthy charging times or space for a home charger.”
