Xeris Biopharma Holdings (NASDAQ:XERS) and Beta Bionics have announced an exclusive worldwide collaboration and license agreement aimed at revolutionizing diabetes management.
The partnership seeks to leverage Xeris' novel XeriSol technology for the development and commercialization of a glucagon product to be integrated into Beta Bionics' proprietary bi-hormonal pump and pump systems.
Beta Bionics is developing and commercializing the iLet Bionic Pancreas platform, utilizing adaptive control algorithms, continuous glucose monitoring, and pump technology to autonomously administer insulin or glucagon to replicate the body’s natural glycemic control and alleviate the challenges of diabetes management.
Beta Bionics CEO, Sean Saint, underscored the significance of this advancement in diabetes care, likening glucagon to the brakes in a car, essential for maintaining glucose control. “Beta Bionics has always felt that a bi-hormonal glucose control system has real advantages over insulin alone…just like the brakes in your car. Now with this partnership with Xeris, we are ready to take the next step in bringing this system to market.”
Under the terms of the license agreement, Xeris stands to receive development payments and low double-digit royalties based on future sales of the Xeris glucagon for pumps and pump systems.
Paul Edick, CEO of Xeris, told investors that the company would “move quickly” to support Beta Bionics in its development program. "We're excited to be partnering with Beta Bionics by being the exclusive provider of the glucagon component that will facilitate their development of the first dual-hormone pump for people with diabetes.”
Xeris is a biopharmaceutical company that boasts three commercially available products: Gvoke, a ready-to-use liquid glucagon for severe hypoglycemia; Keveyis, a proven therapy for primary periodic paralysis; and Recorlev, for the treatment of endogenous Cushing’s syndrome.
Additionally, Xeris maintains a pipeline of development programs aimed at extending current marketed products into new indications and bringing forth new products using its proprietary formulation technology platforms, XeriSol and XeriJect.
