Google has announced the renaming of its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Bard to Gemini and will follow ChatGPT-owner OpenAI's model by charging for a premium service.
The search engine giant, which trades as Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), said its uprated version features the Ultra 1.0 large language model, enhancing capabilities such as coding, content creation, and image generation.
The Gemini app is set to replace Google Assistant on Android, offering functionalities like voice commands, setting timers, and smart home control.
It will be integrated with a simple activation, such as a power button press or voice command. For iOS, Gemini will be accessible through the Google app with a toggle switch, emphasizing Google's ambition to evolve AI assistance.
Initially available in English in the US, expansion plans include adding Asian languages and extending the service globally.
The Google One bundle, priced at $19.99 monthly, offers Gemini Advanced with additional perks like cloud storage and Google Store discounts.
A two-month free trial of Gemini Advanced is currently available, indicating Google's broader strategy to incorporate Gemini across Gmail, Docs, and other Workspace applications, positioning it as a competitor to Microsoft's Copilot in commercial settings.
