RWE planning expansion into UK renewables market

RWE is planning to expand its solar, wind and battery storage infrastructure in the UK

German energy supplier RWE (ETR:RWE) is planning to expand its solar, wind and battery storage infrastructure in the UK, with projects announced for areas in south Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire.

RWE outlined its plans to build a 600MW solar farm with battery storage next to its existing Tween Bridge onshore wind farm by 2029.

“Our strategy is geared towards sustainability and the vigorous expansion of large-scale solar will be part of these ambitions,” commented Katja Wünschel, chief executive of RWE's European and Australian renewables wing.

He added that the company “already generates 15%” of the UK’s energy needs.

RWE announces plans for an exciting new UK project combining solar, batteries, onshore wind & sustainable farming.

The project has an agreement for a possible capacity of up to 600MW & would be located next to RWE's Tween Bridge Wind Farm.

In the press release announcing the plans, RWE added the project would include a package of support for the local community.

The plans come after a lack of wind and colder temperatures saw the UK almost turn to coal power for energy on Monday, with some experts suggesting the close call proved an overreliance was placed on wind power while there was a lack of storage.
