Rio Tinto’s Bell Bay aluminium smelter in Tasmania has secured a A$200 million government support package, providing greater certainty for one of the state’s largest industrial operations.

The Federal and Tasmanian governments will provide funding over five years alongside a new electricity agreement between the smelter and Hydro Tasmania.

Bell Bay employs about 550 people directly and supports additional jobs across contractors, transport and other businesses in northern Tasmania.

The assistance follows uncertainty surrounding the smelter’s long-term future as high electricity and operating costs place pressure on energy-intensive aluminium producers.

Power costs critical to aluminium

Electricity is one of the largest costs involved in producing aluminium, making reliable access to competitively priced power crucial to the economics of smelting operations.

The new arrangement is intended to provide greater certainty around Bell Bay’s energy costs while allowing Rio Tinto to continue operating the facility.

Bell Bay has operated in Tasmania for more than 70 years and has an annual production capacity of more than 180,000 tonnes of aluminium.

The smelter is also a major consumer of Tasmanian renewable electricity, with most of the state’s generation coming from hydroelectric and wind power.

For governments, the support package represents a trade-off between preserving industrial employment and ensuring major power users remain economically viable.

Australia’s aluminium industry has faced growing pressure from international competition, high energy costs and the need to decarbonise production.

The Bell Bay agreement provides Rio Tinto with a five-year window of greater operating certainty while longer-term options for the smelter are considered.
