Australian Potash Ltd (ASX:APC) has partnered with the Wirrpanda Foundation to create opportunities for indigenous employment at the Lake Wells Sulphate of Potash Project in Western Australia.

The Wirrpanda Foundation is the Community Development Program (CDP) provider in Laverton, catering for the registration of all job seekers in the region.

Employment opportunities

Cooperation between APC and the Wirrpanda Foundation is focused on creating real employment opportunities during construction of the SOP project, embracing inclusion and diversity to create a vibrant culture that represents the local communities.

Launched in 2005 by former West Coast Eagles AFL player David Wirrpanda, this foundation aims to lead the provision of education and employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians by working together to empower and build capacity amongst individuals, their families and their communities.

35,000 reached nationally

Through the establishment of a number of programs in Perth, regional Western Australia, Victoria, NSW, the ACT and Queensland, the Wirrpanda Foundation has reached over 35,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people nationally.

APC managing director and CEO Matt Shackleton said, “We are and have always been committed to making real substantive change to the Laverton community through our close working relationship with the shire and the township.

“We are proud to extend this endeavour by pledging jobs through the Wirrpanda Foundation’s excellent and sector-leading programs that encompass work skills, on the job mentoring and ongoing employment support for indigenous new hires.

“Over the next several months we look forward to developing our relationship into one delivering productive outcomes for APC, the Wirrpanda Foundation and most importantly, the local and regional people of Laverton.”

APC is committed to providing flexible work arrangements, active Indigenous participation and gender balance.

DFS for Lake Wells

The company recently published the findings of a definitive feasibility study (DFS) into the development of a 150,000 tonnes per annum, solar salt SOP operation at Lake Wells.

The Lake Wells project is 160 kilometres NNE of Laverton and consists of granted mining and exploration licences covering a total of more than 2,100 square kilometres.

Wirrapanda Foundation director and founder David Wirrpanda said, “The Foundation is committed to partnering with Matt and the team at APC to provide local people with long-term career opportunities.

“To achieve that goal, we will be actively engaging the community to identify and prepare CDP participants who can take up roles as the project develops.”
