Brain Scientific announced Monday that Virginia Tech is using its NeuroCap, a disposable EEG headset, as well as its Neuro EEG, a 16-channel portable EEG amplifier, to treat its athletes.

These electroencephalogram (EEG) tools are tests used to find problems related to electrical activity of the brain.

They are being used by the athletic departments of universities like Virginia Tech to quickly diagnose concussions and other traumatic injuries to the brain and improve treatments.

“The researchers needed to bring EEG testing to the athlete rather than transporting the athlete to a traditional EEG testing facility,” said Brain Scientific. “Within the hectic environment of sports medicine, they needed a technology that could be deployed without EEG technicians and without bulky EEG equipment.”

NeuroCap, manufactured by Brain Scientific’s subsidiary MemoryMD, is a disposable EEG headset with 22 electrodes and 19 EEG channels, which is now being put to the test in nursing homes, intensive care units and neurology clinics. The device provides high-quality EEG tracing within minutes.

NeuroEEG, meanwhile, works in parallel with the NeuroCap. It is a compact, portable and wireless EEG amplifier that fits in the palm of the hand and is used to record, transmit and display electrical brain activity.

MemoryMD’s EEG technology is far cheaper and less bulky than a traditional EEG system, but provides EEG tracings of the same quality.

The pair of devices can be carried to both the playing field and the locker room.

Acquired by Brain Scientific last September, MemoryMD is a New York City-based medical-device firm specializing in EEG systems. Its FDA-approved devices, NeuroEEG and NeuroCap, simplify the setup of EEGs and are used in emergency departments, intensive care units and sleep labs.
