Blackwood Corporation identifies coal in north Galilee Basin, investigates export options

Blackwood Corporation (ASX: BWD) is advancing operations in the Galilee Basin and putting agreements in place to ensure adequate export capacity.

Blackwood holds 49 coal exploration permits, representing 5800 square kilometres, across all key Queensland coal-bearing basins, Galilee, Bowen, Surat and Clarence Morton, representing one of the largest tenure portfolios in the state.

At the South Pentland Project, drilling and seismic acquisition, validation and processing are running two months ahead of schedule, with the seismic survey completed in record time and just a few drill holes remaining.

Drilling to date has shown four or more coal seam groups present in all holes, with a cumulative coal thickness of 10-15 metres.

South Pentland is strategically located in the northeast region of the Galilee Basin, less than 250 kilometres to the coast. Major roads and railway already exist adjacent to the northern edge of the tenure, making it well placed from a transport infrastructure perspective.

Once drilling is complete, the rigs will move north to the North Hughenden Project, following an encouraging geological field mapping program.

Drilling at North Hughenden will target the same Permian Betts Creek Beds, which outcrop in the Porcupine Gorge, located centrally within Blackwood’s tenure.

The gorge itself is protected as a designated National Park, however, the surrounding tenure outside the protected area is targeted for exploration.

Transport MOUs executed

Blackwood has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), with Queensland Rail and the Port of Townsville, to ensure the company has the export capability necessary to develop its north Galilee projects.

The Queensland Rail MOU provides for the joint investigation of the potential to export coal from Blackwood’s Galilee projects along the Mount Isa system using existing rail infrastructure.

Queensland Rail controls more than 1,000 kilometres of track that predominantly carries heavy freight to and from the coast of Queensland.

The Mount Isa System traverses the northern portion of Blackwood’s South Pentland project and is 55 kilometres from North Hughenden.

The Port of Townsville is a multi-commodity industrial port in Far North Queensland, situated approximately 250 kilometres from Blackwood’s South Pentland project.

Blackwood has executed an MOU with the Port of Townsville to jointly investigate the potential to export coal from the Galilee projects through the port, using both existing and new infrastructure.

The MOUs are aimed at guaranteeing access to infrastructure when it is needed, as well as providing a cost-effective supply chain solution for Blackwood’s Galilee Basin projects.
