Hazelwood Resources (ASX: HAZ) will begin hot commissioning and trial production at its Ferrotungsten Project in Vietnam this week having now completed pre-production activities.

First production of ferrotungsten metal is expected within seven days of start-up, with first sales revenue forecast for this month.

The ATC Ferrotungsten Project in Vietnam is the largest ferrotungsten plant outside of China and its design is believed to be the most advanced in the world.

Ferrotungsten is a master alloy that is used in the production of high speed steels, tool steels and temperature resistant alloys.

Outside of China, there is limited production capacity of the master alloy.

The European ferrotungsten price is showing signs of recovery from an 18-month low, with sales reported above US$40 per kilogram.

The Chinese ferrotungsten export price is currently between US$46 and US$48 per kilogram.

The initial phase of hot commissioning, over several shifts, will fire the furnace to bake the electrodes, which have now been set in place and packed with graphite.

Following the firing process, tungsten feedstock and reductant will be added and the smelting process will be initiated under electric arc.

All feedstock required for trial production has arrived onsite and has been prepared for feeding into the furnace, having been sampled and assayed in the site laboratory.

Hazelwood had a cash position of $5.05 million at the end of December 2012.
