Altura Mining starts drilling at its Smithfield lithium project

Altura Mining (ASX:AJM) has started drilling at its Smithfield lithium project in Western Australia.

The planned reconnaissance reverse circulation drilling program will be one of the first to be done in the historical Smithfield area and will be targeting the known occurrences of pegmatites in the region.

This initial program will comprise 10-12 holes in seven locations to test the interpreted pegmatites and to establish if they are mineralised with lithium, tantalum or tin. These are associated with the nearby Greenbushes mining operations.

The program will comprise about 800-1000 metres of drilling.

Meanwhile, the company has also completed a further five diamond core holes at its advanced Pilgangoora lithium project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The drilling at Pilgangoora is focused on resource extensions and baseline environmental monitoring to support mining evaluation studies. This work is likely to continue until June 2013.

Altura had a cash balance of $14.47 million at the end of December 2012 quarter.
