Dallas-based EXCO is exploring its options

The future of oil & gas company EXCO Resources Inc (NYSE:XCO) is in doubt as the company is exploring its strategic options.

A special committee has been formed to assess the company's operating and financial situation, and to brainstorm some possible strategies to pursue.

The committee has a long laundry list to run through, including: exchanges of existing indebtedness for common stock (including privately negotiated exchanges); the renegotiation or repurchase of existing indebtedness; the issuance of equity; divestitures of assets; the issuance of additional indebtedness; in court and/or out of court restructurings; and the restructuring of its gathering, transportation and certain other contracts.

The announcement wiped more than a third off the value of EXCO's shares, making them the worst performers on the New York Stock Exchange.
