First Quantum Minerals Minerals (TSE:FM) shares were lifted as the miner kicked off production at its $2.1 billion Sentinel mine in copper-rich Zambia.

The firm has been built over the last three years and is set to produce 280,000 to 300,000 tonnes of copper per year from one large orebody.

Ramp up will now take place to bring the mine to commercial production levels.

This is expected after the state power firm Zesco has connected electricity to the mine by September.

First Quantum hopes to overcome the problem of low commodity prices globally by improved efficiency.

Shares in Toronto added 1.46% to C$6.97.
