Fusion IP plc (Fusion) was established in 2002 to commercialise university-generated intellectual property. It has long-term exclusive agreements with two of the UK's leading research-intensive universities, the University of Sheffield and Cardiff University, giving it exclusive access to all the IP generated by their research departments. These exclusive agreements enable Fusion to identify world class IP and turn it into a commercial opportunity, either through the creation of a start-up company or a licence.

We are 100% committed to building successful, profitable businesses out of the exceptional intellectual property being generated by the UK’s universities.
More than a traditional venture capitalist, our business model is based on long-term partnership agreements with leading research-intensive universities that enable us to work with each university to identify and then exploit its high tech research.
Our investment strategy of having a balanced portfolio with a combination of short, medium and long-term investments aims to minimise risk, whilst offering the potential for a significant growth in value for our shareholders.
HOW WE WORK WITH OUR UNIVERSITY PARTNERS
Since our flotation on AIM in 2005, we have signed long-term agreements with four universities:
These partnership agreements are structured to allow each partner to play to their strengths – our university partners focus on IP creation and innovation and we focus on commercialisation, through the creation of spin-out companies. In Sheffield our agreement also gives us exclusivity to license any appropriate technology and share the resulting profit with the university and academic team.
With each partner university we are well integrated into the university’s commercialisation process, working with each existing technology transfer group, to ensure that the commercialisation process is smooth and seamless.
Since flotation on AIM in 2005, we have raised a total of £48m from UK public markets for investment in the Fusion model and a further £60m for our portfolio companies from venture funds.
In the long term our success is measured in terms of material exits and the return we generate on these exits for our shareholders.
Our exclusive relationships with The University of Sheffield, Cardiff University, The University of Nottingham and Swansea University provide us with some of the UK’s most exceptional research and IP.
In collaboration with the University’s existing technology transfer operations, we identify emerging opportunities for commercial development. We then commercialise this IP, either through the formation of spin-out companies or by licensing.
The Fusion IP model is to sign long term partnership agreements with leading research intensive universities for 100% of their future IP pipelines and the right to equity in the resultant spin-out companies on incorporation. The interests of the academic are aligned by giving them a significant shareholding in the spin-out company.
This gives us a powerful combination of high quality IP from our university partners, our own commercial expertise and start-up funding, and enables us to turn world class research into valuable businesses.
We support and nurture a range of companies in an exciting variety of sectors. From medicine to energy, we seek to make the very best of the emerging IP from our university partners.
