Carbon Energy plant produces first synthetic gas
Carbon Energy (ASX:CNX) has produced a commercial variety of synthetic gas (syngas) from its underground coal gasification plant (UCG) in south east Queensland. The gas is suitable for use in production of high value chemicals such as ammonia, petrochemicals, liquids and methanol.
Carbon Energy Managing Director Andrew Dash said, "today's milestone has seen the successful transition in our process from air injection to a combination of oxygen and steam, enabling Carbon Energy to produce a hydrogen rich commercial variety of syngas."
This trial would enable the company to convert more coal into gas, and importantly the gas produced is richer in energy and active chemicals, making it suitable for use in chemical feedstock production by petrochemical reliant industries.
The company hopes to increase the quantity of coal gasified from 70t per day to around 150t per day. Demonstrating the commercial viability of Carbon Energy's technology. Once current UCG trialling is completed, the company will pursue a manufacturing facility near its Surat Basin site. Where is has acquired a 517 hectare land tract adjacent to the Bloodwood Creek site
Carbon Energy was trading at 30 cents.
