BG Group announces another new discovery Santos Basin, offshore Brazil

This morning BG Group have announced a new hydrocarbon discovery within their Santos Basin pre salt concession area, this latest announcement follows last weeks strong test results from the Guara discovery, located 50km away.

Today’s discovery well, known as Abare West, proved the presence of an accumulation of oil and natural gas.

Abare West is in 2163 metres of water, approximately 290 km off the coast of Sao Paulo State.

Abare West is approximately 30 kilometres from the Iguacu discovery and 40 km from the Carioca discovery and 50 km to the west of the Guara discovery (1-BRSA-494-SPS), also in the BM-S-9 concession.

The Abare West discovery is part of BG Group’s extensive operations with the Santos Basin which covers a total area of approximately 7,450 km₂. The Santos Basin project is primarily being conducted in partnership with Petrobras and several other minority stakeholders. The Abare West partnership is between BG Group (30%), Petrobras (45%, operator) and Repsol (25%).

The well will be fully analysed and the forward plan for this discovery will be incorporated into an evaluation plan for this accumulation approved by ANP.

In a statement this morning, BG Chief Executive, Frank Chapman commented on the ongoing progress of the Santos Basin project;

“Abare West further extends an outstanding sequence for BG Group and partners operating in the Santos Basin, with eight discoveries in three years.”
