FTSE100 poised to start a little higher after yesterday's US boost

FTSE 100 is poised to start a tad higher after the US jobs data pushed it higher yesterday and saw the Dow Jones push past the 17,000 mark.

Trading volumes are likely to be lower today as the US markets are closed for the Independence day holiday and investors stateside start their long weekend.

Big news yesterday was that the US had created 288,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1% from 6.3%- fuelling optimism of the economy's recovery.

The market had been expecting jobs to have increased by 215,000.

The UK index of leading shares closed yesterday up 49 at 6,865 but today is called to open around one point higher.

Meanwhile, the positive US stats sent Asian markets higher overnight, with the Nikkei 225 in Japan up 83 at 15,431, while the Shanghia composite is down seven.

On Wall Street, the Dow finished a shortened trading day up 62 points at 17,068.

Not much on the corporate front today and on the macro economic side in Europe - German factory orders and Retail PMI.
