Genel Energy (LON:GENL) has revealed that production has begun from two new horizontal wells on the Tawke oilfield in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

The horizontal wells flowed at a combined rate of 37,000 barrels per day, according to operator DNO International.

In one of the wells, Tawke-21, eight fracture corridors penetrated by a 980-metre horizontal section flowed at an average rate of 9,700 barrels a day each, while in the other, Tawke-22, six kilometres away, seven productive fracture corridors penetrated by an 800-metre horizontal section flowed at an average rate of 8,800 barrels a day each.

Two previous Tawke wells came on stream in the second half of last year. Two more are currently being drilled, while another three are scheduled, bringing the well count to nine by the end of the year.

Genel has a 25% interest in the Tawke field.

Meanwhile, the JM-1 well offshore Morocco, which is 37.5% owned by Genel, was plugged and abandoned by operator Cairn Energy (LON:CNE).

Work is ongoing to assess the extent of moveable hydrocarbons, Cairn said.
