ImpediMed L-Dex® technology for breast cancer, CPT code filed with American Medical Assoc.
Queensland-based ImpediMed (ASX: IPD) announced today that an application for a Category 1 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Code has been filed with the American Medical Association.
A prominent US based surgeon sponsored the application, which seeks assignment of a dedicated code that can be used by physicians across the US in billing health insurance providers, that use the company’s L-Dex® technology in the prospective management of breast cancer patients at risk of lymphoedema.
ImpediMed CEO Greg Brown said, “we are honoured to have such an accomplished US surgeon sponsor this important milestone in applying for a category one reimbursement code."
ImpediMed plans to drive lymphoedema education and adoption of pre-emptive care for all patients will be greatly enhanced should this code be successful, he said.
In the US, surgeons are the key to facilitating pre-emptive care, their support of a Category 1 code for the L-Dex test, demonstrates a commitment to protecting the quality of life of patients.
The United States CPT coding process is the mechanism by which new technologies are assigned codes, which are used by US public and private health insurance companies to describe the procedures and services offered by clinicians.
The AMA’s CPT Editorial Panel considers and evaluates new coding requests three times each year.
This coding application will be brought in front of the panel during their February 2010 meeting.
ImpediMed is a global leader in developing and distributing medical devices employing Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) technologies for use in the non-invasive clinical assessment and monitoring of fluid status.
Investors have saluted the company's progress, pushing the share price up from $0.51 in July, by 47% to the current $0.75.
