Bluechiip (ASX: BCT) has reaches a milestone in the development of the company’s commercial-ready Matchbox reader hardware, engaging United States-based Plexus Corp (NASDAQ: PLXS) to manufacture the product.
The Matchbox reader comes pre-loaded with Bluechiip’s Stream wireless sample tracking software.
It can read Bluechiip tags in sample storage containers such as tubes and vials, as well as the racks used to store these samples, which are usually contained in ultra-low temperature freezers and tanks in biobanking facilities at down to minus 196 degrees Celsius.
Plexus’ appointment complements the January 2011 agreement with Geneva-based STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) which will manufacture Bluechiip’s unique tracking tags.
Plexus specialises in manufacturing complex, high technology products, and supports a range of market sectors, including networking and communications, medical, industrial and commercial and defence, security and aerospace.
Wireless tracking technology
Bluechiip’s wireless tracking solution is a major shift from current methods of tracking, such as labels (hand written or pre-printed), barcodes (linear and 2D) and microelectric integrated circuit-based radio frequency identification.
Based on Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems technology, it contains no electronics and does not require visible tags or line of sight for tracking.
The Bluechiip technology also has the ability to sense the temperature of each item a tag is attached to or embedded in.
Importantly, the technology has applications in a range of industries, including healthcare and life science, security, defence and manufacturing.
