Market strength reflected in all sectors of ASX

The Australian market got off to a good start this week, with the benchmark All Ordinaries index closing 1% higher on the back of positivity from overseas.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones closed 1.23% higher on Friday, following better than expected jobs data, while London’s FTSE 100 closed up 1.81%.

While retail trade data had a slightly sobering effect on local stocks late in the day, it was not enough to reverse the trend, with market leaders from many industries showing good gains.

Banking, financial, advisory, investment and funds management services provider Macquarie Group (ASX: MQG) closed 4.44% higher at $26.10.

Fellow financial company AMP (ASX: AMP) was up 1.19% at $4.27, while National Australia Bank (ASX: NAB) shares rose 1.77% to $24.17.

Property group Goodman Group Forus (ASX: GMG) took out a 3.08% gain to close at $0.67, followed by agricultural fertiliser and industrial chemical manufacturer Incitec Pivot (ASX: IPL), which rose 2.87% to $3.23.

QBE Insurance (ASX: QBE) closed the day 2.45% higher at $12.13, while News Corporation (ASX: NWS) also had a solid result, gaining 2.41% to $18.69.

In resource news, Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) shares gained 2.55% to close at $72.30, while BHP Billiton (ASX: BHP) rose 1.62% to $38.21 and Woodside Petroleum (ASX: WPL) closed up 0.94% at $34.41.

Contractors also made an appearance, with WorleyParsons (ASX: WOR) closing 1.28% higher at $28.57 and Leighton Holdings (ASX: LEI) up 1.17% at $24.25.

National rail freight and ports owner Asciano (ASX: AIO) closed up 1.3% at $4.69, and airline Qantas (ASX: QAN) gained 0.62% to $1.62.

Communications giant Telstra Corporation (ASX: TLS) closed the day at $3.38, up 1.2%, drinks behemoth Coca Cola Amatil (ASX: CCL) gained 0.78% to $11.58, and Westfield Retail Trust (ASX: WRT) closed up 0.4% at $2.51.
