Halcygen files for registration of anti-fungal product, SUBA-Itraconazole
Developer of improved variants of existing proprietary pharmaceuticals known as super generics, HalcyGen Pharmaceuticals (ASX: HGN) has filed a registration of its anti-fungal product, known as SUBA-Itraconazole, in the EU.
Super generic drugs are reformulations of off-patent drugs and bridge the gap between mainline and pharmaceutical companies and high volume generics. They can often enjoy patent protected positions and have higher margins.
SUBA-Itraconazole is a "value added formulation" of the anti-fungal drug Sporanox®. The anti-fungal target market is a worldwide annual $600 million market. SUBA-Itraconazole has significant benefits relative to Sporanox®.
Dr Roger Aston chief executive officer of HalcyGen said the company is working on appointing marketing and distribution partners for the EU.
Aston said discussions are underway with several pharmaceutical companies. When launched in the EU market, SUBA-Itraconazole will be competing in the European itraconazole market which is currently over US$120 million per year.”
He said SUBA-Itraconazole would be registed in the EU in 2010, following meeting with Sweden’s MPA and the UK’s medicines and healthcate products regulatory agency.
