Phosphate Australia completes maiden manganese drilling in WA
Tuesday, September 27, 2011 by Christine Feary
Phosphate Australia (ASX: POZ) has completed its maiden drilling program on the Iroquois manganese prospect, part of the Earaheedy Basin manganese project in Western Australia.
Assay samples have been sent for analysis; results are expected within one month.
The company took advantage of an air core drill rig that was being mobilised in the region to undertake a short drilling program based around the historic drillhole, TRC 4.
TRC 4 was drilled in the 1990s by base metals explorer RGC Exploration, and returned an intersection of 6 metres at 34.1% manganese and 4.2% lead from 34m.
Although drilling conditions were not ideal for the air core rig, Phosphate Australia was able to drill seven holes for 282m within a 500m radius of TRC 4.
The Iroquois prospect is highly prospective due to its large target area, 21 kilometres x 5km, and the high grades and thicknesses demonstrated in TRC 4.
It has shallow depths of mineralisation and considerable potential for bedded manganese deposits to yield very large tonnages.
Phosphate Australia acquired 100% of the Earaheedy Basin project in December 2010.
