Aurora Labs produces first powder for use in 3D metal printers

The aim is to manufacture full-sized PPUs producing 5 tonnes of powder per day.

3D printers use powders to create their printed object

Aurora Labs Ltd (ASX:A3D) has produced laboratory test-scale powder from its prototype powder production unit (PPU).

The prototype PPU is intended to test and demonstrate the technology for producing very high-quality powders for use with 3D metal printers.

Importantly, these powders can be produced at substantially lower costs than existing processes.

The next phase of proving high volume production will be important as it aims to confirm yields and quality parameters.

Opens up new opportunities for the company

Aurora’s managing director David Budge said: “The result for producing our first powder is an outstanding achievement for the company.

"The process of going from concept through to patenting and production of a product is at times an arduous one, but the team has worked extremely hard, determined to achieve this outcome.

"Seeing a result where we have produced high-quality spherical powder where almost all of the powder produced is within a very narrow size range is a remarkable result and one that the company and its staff can be proud of.

"This development opens up significant new opportunities for the Company. We hope that this result will pave the way for Aurora Labs to become a global player in a highly compelling industry.”

Expanding from small format printers

Aurora manufactures the S-Titanium Pro small format printer.

It is a retail 3D metal printer with a price tag of about US$50,000, making it one of the world’s most affordable multi-mode 3D metal printers.

Aurora continues to advance the developments of its large format technology (LFT) by printing a significant number of parts and shapes with its LFT prototype.

Recently, the company reached a critical milestone being the ability for its prototype to print simple parts at market speed.

Market speed is at a rate comparable to existing technology in the market, but at a fraction of the ultimate speed of the LFT, about 100 times faster than existing 3D printers.

Powders is a billion dollar market

It is intended that the powders produced from the PPUs will support part of the projected high utilisation of consumables from the company’s large format printers.

The international powdered metals market is valued in the billions of dollars.
