Pearson to sell 50% stake in The Economist

Pearson (LON:PSON) has followed up its sale of the Financial Times by announcing the planned disposal of its stake in news magazine The Economist.

The publishing group said it was in discussions with The Economist Group board and trustees regarding the potential sale of its 50% share.

"There is no certainty that this process will lead to a transaction," it said in a statement. "We will make further announcements if and when appropriate."

The move represents Pearson's latest step in its bid to become a pure education publisher.

Last Thursday, it announced the planned sale of the FT Group, which owns the salmon-coloured UK financial newspaper, to Japan's Nikkei for £844mln.

The deal also included respected financial publications such as The Banker and Investors Chronicle.

Analysts have speculated that the group may also put its Penguin Random House book publishing business on the block.
