Big picture - Why invest in Broken Hill Prospecting Ltd

Broken Hill Prospecting Ltd Snapshot

Broken Hill Prospecting Limited (BPL) is a mining and exploration company that is seeking to develop the significant Pyrite Hill, Big Hill and Railway cobalt deposits located 25 kilometres south-west of the world famous mining centre of Broken Hill in western New South Wales.

The deposits are geologically unusual because they do not occur as a bi-product with richer copper or nickel deposits, as is the case in nearly every other mine around the globe. Cobalt, therefore, would be the main focus of any mining development.

The deposits exist near surface and recent drilling has defined a footprint which is at least 4km in length that is open at width, depth and length. The mineralisation can be simply processed to a cobalt-pyrite concentrate, which, because of the excellent location, could be transported by rail/road/sea for processing to produce cobalt, sulphuric acid and iron ore products

With demand for cobalt growing from new-age applications including rechargeable batteries for electric cars and super alloys for turbines and motors, BPL offers a large and secure future supply source with low political and technical risk in comparison with other producing countries. Currently, 65% of the world’s supply is from central Africa.

Cobalt Deposits

BPL’s cobalt deposits are within two granted mining leases (ML66 and ML67) enclosed by Exploration Licence EL6622.

Since listing on the ASX in February 2011 estimates of the project’s resources have more than doubled to 35.7 million tonnes of 1.85 pounds per tonne cobalt (0.084% Co) with additional Potential for an additional 37-59 million tonnes of between 0.0775-0.084% Co. The Potential is conceptual and more drilling is required to further define it. There is no certainty that this will result in a Mineral Resource. Clearly, the size of BPL’s mineral inventory as outlined below has grown nearly five-fold and many mapped areas of cobalt-pyrite rock have yet to be drill tested.

Cobalt Research

The website of the Cobalt Development Institute (CDI) ( contains a considerable amount of useful information on cobalt. Several other websites which provide interesting data on cobalt:

Cobalt Uses

Cobalt (Co) is a minor metal with many special qualities:

  • Co is a major component in many new rechargeable batteries (electric cars, mobile phones, laptop computers). Many lithium-ion batteries contain up to 60% Co.
  • Co is hard, heavy and has a high melting point. It used extensively in superalloys and high pressure and temperature resistant metals for use in applications such as in energy turbines, jet motors, military hardware, aircraft and space craft.
  • Co is strongly magnetic and is used in magnets, often in preference to Ni, Mn and Fe
  • Co in dyes/pigments has been used for many centuries for bright blue colouring.
 • Co is a principle component of vitamin B12, essential for blood and brain. Co is used in human and animal food supplements.
  • Co is used as; a catalyst, in jewellery, medical isotopes, cosmetics and many other applications.

Base Metal Deposits

Broken Hill Style Mineralisation

In addition to cobalt, the Company’s tenements contain numerous rock types, structural zones and metal anomalies which include important indicators of possible nearby zinc, lead and silver mineralisation of the Broken Hill style.

The Broken Hill deposit was discovered in 1883 and is still producing after more than 127 years. It is the largest deposit of lead, zinc and silver ever discovered and has had an estimated direct value to the Australian economy of over $A80 billion.
